Vidanga - medical application, benefits and contraindications

Vidanga (Embeliaribes) is widely distributed throughout India. It is commonly known as false pepper.  Vidanga is widely accepted as the most effective krimighna dravya (antimicrobial agent) in Ayurveda. 

In Agni Puranaa, Vidanga is used in treatment for gastroenteritis, cirrhosis of liver, oedema, skin diseases including leprosy and effective in killing worms in the alimentary canal. 

Krimighna (Anthelmintic ) Property of Vidanga is a useful herb to manage worm infestation that includes threadworms, roundworms and types of worms.

Health Benefits


Vidanga helps to improve digestive fire and controls vomiting, nausea, indigestion, and flatulence due to its hot potency. It also helps manage constipation due to its Rechana (laxative) property.


Vidanga has an antidepressant effect which helps in managing depression.

Throat infection

Antimicrobial activity of Vidanga reduces cough and throat infection.


Vidanga is effective on management of body weight gain as well as exerted lipid lowering action.

Skin disease

Vidanga helps to control skin diseases due to its Shodhan (purification) property.

Vidanga powder 1/2 - 1 tsp.

Avoid the use of Vidanga if you have low sperm count.
