Overview

A UTI is an infection of the urinary tract, sometimes called a bladder infection. The urinary tract infection (UTI) involves infection in the kidneys, ureters, bladder or urethra. These are the organs that urine passes through when eliminated from the body.

According to Ayurveda, Urinary Tract Infection  is caused by the aggravation of Pitta Dosha. So, a diet and lifestyle that increases Pitta causes UTI. Aggravated Pitta produces heating toxins in the body. These heating toxins accumulate in the urinary channels and create an imbalance in the infection-fighting properties of the urinary system. It might lead to bacterial growth in the system, amounting to UTI.  Ayurvedic medicine, balances the infection-fighting properties of the urinary system and pacifies heating toxins, thereby giving long-term relief to the patient.

Symptoms

Urinary tract infections don't always cause signs and symptoms, but when they do they may include:

  • A strong, persistent urge to urinate
  • A burning sensation when urinating
  • Passing frequent, small amounts of urine
  • Urine that appears cloudy
  • Urine that appears red, bright pink or cola-colored —a sign of blood in the urine
  • Strong-smelling urine
  • Pelvic pain, in women especially in the center of the pelvis and around the area of the pubic bone

Symptoms of an upper tract UTI

  • Pain and tenderness in the upper back and sides
  • Fever
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

Causes

E.coli bacteria (usually found in the digestive system) is the most common cause of bladder infections

  • Working in the sun or hot weather and excessive physical exertion aggravates the condition
  • Bacteria can be transferred during sexual intercourse
  • Dehydration leads to infrequent urination, creating a stagnant and thriving environment for bacteria
  • Holding it in can cause the urine to “back up,”. making it more difficult to empty out your bladder the next time you go
  • Excess use of soap, douching or using other artificially scented cleansing products can upset the balance of the good bacteria and pH
  • Poor hygiene, not cleaning often enough can cause bacterial buildup
  • Synthetic underwear can make it difficult to the skin down under to “breathe.” Same goes for tight-fitting clothing
  • Increased intake of sour, salty, bitter, oily, spicy, fried foods, tea, coffee and alcohol
  • Some strong antibiotics can kill healthy bacteria in the body

According to Ayurveda, there are three elements present in our body : vata, pitta and kapha which should be in balance. Urinary Tract Infection is caused by the aggravation of Pitta Dosha.  So, a diet and lifestyle that increases Pitta causes UTI. Aggravated Pitta produces heat and toxins in the body. These get accumulated in the urinary channels resulting in excessive bacterial growth in the system causing UTI.

Treatment

Treatment protocol aims at:

  1. Giving relief from pain, burning sensation and treating inflammation and infection in the urinary tract.
  2. Prevent recurrence by healing and repairing the tissue
