Ulcer


Overview

Stomach ulcers, also known as gastric ulcers, are open sores that develop on the lining of the stomach. Ulcers occur when stomach acid damages the lining of the digestive tract. 

Ulcers can result in internal bleeding. Bleeding may be slow leading to complications like Anaemia or severe blood loss that may require hospitalisation and blood transfusion.

Symptoms

  1. Upper abdominal pain is a common symptom
  2. Pain types: can be dull,burning pain
  3. Pain in the chest
  4. Gastrointestinal: belching, heartburn, indigestion, nausea, passing excessive amounts of gas, or vomiting
  5. Vomit that is bloody or looks like coffee grounds
  6. Dark, tarry stools
  7. Abdominal discomfort
  8. Whole body: fatigue, feeling full sooner than normal, or loss of appetite

Causes

  1. Pitta aggravating diets like excess of spicy, pungent, acidic, sour, acidic nature foods.
  2. Eating too fast or too slow.
  3. Taking excessive amount of diet
  4. Taking food at irregular time
  5. Eating in stress
  6. Incompatible food
  7. Eating food in indigestion or when the previous meal isn't digested.
  8. Alcohol, smoking, excess anger etc.
  9. Exposure to excess hot climate
  10. Food items which produces burning sensation in the body

According to Ayurveda there are three fundamental energies present in our body: Vata, Pitta, Kapha which should be in balance. The main cause is considered to be the aggravation of Pitta Dosha in the body due to the causative factors mentioned above.

Treatment

Treatment protocol aims at :

  • Giving relief from abdominal pain, belching, heartburn and vomiting.
  • Healing the lining of the stomach wall, prevention of complications and improving overall digestive health and peristalsis so that recurrence of ulcer can be prevented.
  • Provide strength and stamina to the whole body
  • Regular intake of supplements can help in long term relief of ulcer

The first line of treatment should always be avoiding the causative factors.If the problem persists then consider the following treatment protocol: 

  • Digestive issues such as excessive loss of appetite, belching, heartburn, nausea, bloating, passing excessive gas and indigestion happen due to unhealthy diet and lifestyle. Treating with Laghusootshekhar ras, Pravalapanchamrutha will remove toxins and give soothing relief.
  • Upper abdomen and chest pain, discomfort - Inflammation in the stomach lining results in dull or burning pain. Manage it with Yasthimadhu, Kamadudha, Shankhavati, and Avipattikar churna
  • Anemia, bloody or looks like coffee ground vomiting, and dark tarry stools - Inflammation left untreated results in damaging the lining of the stomach and intestine causing it to bleed. Yastimadhu, Sariva, Amalaki, kamadudha will provide relief and heal the tissue

When to see a doctor?

  • Having symptoms of anemia, such as dizziness, weakness, fatigue, and a pale complexion; your ulcer may be bleeding.
  • You have symptoms of an ulcer and develop severe back pain; your ulcer may be perforating the stomach wall.
  • You have symptoms of an ulcer and vomit blood or material that looks like coffee grounds, or you pass dark red, bloody, or black stools, or stools that resemble currant jelly; you may be bleeding internally.
