Tonsilitis

Overview

Tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils, oval-shaped pads of tissue at the back of the throat on each side. The tonsils are immune competent organs which serve as the immune system's first line of defense against ingested or inhaled foreign pathogens, and as such frequently engorge with blood to assist in immune responses to common illnesses such as the common cold.

Symptoms

  • Difficult or painful swallowing
  • Red, swollen tonsils
  • White or yellow coating or patches on the tonsils
  • Sore throat
  • Enlarged, tender glands (lymph nodes) in the neck

In Ayurveda, tonsillitis is called Galaayu. There are three elements present in our body : vata, pitta and Kapha which should be in balance. Pitta and Kapha are imbalanced in the body leading to low immunity. Ayurvedic physicians consider recurring infection and inflammation of the tonsils to be a key factor in illness in later life.

Causes

  • Cold climate
  • Intake food containing excess oil
  • Exposure to the cold breeze
  • Excess intake of cold stuff like ice-cream, cold drinks or cold water

Treatment

Treatment protocol aims at:
  1. Reduce the pain and inflammation of the tonsils.
  2. Boost the immunity of the body and make the tonsils fight with a pathogen without undergoing an inflamed stage.
  3. Rejuvenate the whole body and  prevent further infection.

The first line of treatment should always be avoiding the causative factors. If the problem persists then consider the following treatment protocol.

  • Swollen inflamed tonsils give pain in the throat and also block the passage of the throat that results in difficulty in swallowing and sore throat. Tribhuvan kirti rasa, Sudarshan churna will reduce the inflammation and pain.
  • Sitopaladi churna, Tankana, Surasa are very good for boosting immunity of the body and preventing further infection.
  • Heal the white patches in the throat and also give relief from sore throat with Yashtimadhu by healing and repairing the tissue.
