Tinnitus


Overview

Tinnitus is the perception of noise or ringing in the ears. It refers to hearing a sound that doesn't come from any source outside the body. Only the person who has tinnitus can hear it in the form of steady, high pitched ringing. 

Symptoms

  • Ringing in ears.
  • Buzzing roaring clicking hisses or humming sounds in the ear.
  • Sensation of hearing sound without any external sound.

According to Ayurveda, there are three elements present in our body : vata, pitta and kapha which should be in balance. Tinnitus is considered as Karnanada cause by the aggravation of Vata.

Causes

  • Age related hearing loss. 
  • Exposure to loud noise.
  • Ear wax blockage.
  • Ear bone changes.
  • Some diseases like - Meniere's disease., TMJ disorders, Acoustic neuroma. ,Muscle spasms in the inner ear, Eustachian tube dysfunction, Muscle spasms in the inner ear.
  • Blood vessel disorders.
  • Some medications.

Treatment

  • Abnormal neuronal activity in the auditory part of the brain produces tinnitus.
  • Ashwagandha, Jatamansi, Brahmi  are helpful to reduce the tinnitus by  calming down the nervous system.
  • Lashuna is helpful in correcting blood related issues associated with tinnitus
  • Amalaki, Gokshura, Yashtimadhu are useful in age related tinnitus as they have rich antioxidant and anti-ageing properties.
  • Sarivadi vati helps to cure ear infection and hearing loss.

Other therapies - Nasya (Administration of drugs by the route of nasal cavity), Kabala/Gandusha - Holding medicated oil or liquid in mouth), Shiro dhara, Shirobasthi.
