Tension Headache


Overview

A tension headache (tension-type headache) is the most common type of headache. It can cause mild, moderate, or intense pain behind your eyes and in your head and neck. Some people say that a tension headache feels like a tight band around their forehead.

Symptoms

  • Dull, aching head pain
  • Sensation of tightness or pressure across your forehead or on the sides and back of your head
  • confusion
  • Tenderness on your scalp, neck and shoulder muscles
  • Seizure
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Weakness

According to Ayurveda there are three elements present in our body: vata, pitta and kapha which can affect the body functions which need to be in balance. Vata imbalance is the main  cause for tension headaches. It is known as Ardhavabheda in ayurveda.

Causes

Exact cause of Tension headaches is unknown.

Predisposing factors.-

  • Stress
  •  Inadequate sleep
  • Irregular Posture 
  • Driving.
  • Irregular lifestyle
  • No physical activity  
  • Excess physical activity
  • Eating cold food
  • Irregular diet
  •  Eating while doing other work etc

Treatment

Treatment protocol aims at:
  1. Relief from Headache
  2. Prevent the complications associated with  headache
  3. Preventing recurrence by revitalizing the nervous system

The first line of treatment should always be avoiding the causative factors. If the problem persists then consider the following treatment protocol.

Tension headaches occur due to hyperactivity of head and neck structures like blood vessels, nerves and muscles resulting in tenderness on your scalp, neck and shoulder muscles.

  • Headache : Various tissue and neurological conditions may cause Severe pain or one side pain. Godanti, Avipattikar churna, Laghusootshekhar ras helps to reduce the pain severity which is helped in reducing neurovascular pain by its antioxidant properties. 
  • Reduce stress and provide good sleep - Ashwagandha, Jatamansi,Tagara, Brahmi, Shatavari pacifies vata, pitta and causes soothing of the nervous system reducing the trigger periods.
