Skin allergy


Overview

Skin allergies are an overreaction of the body's immune system to specific substances that it misidentifies as harmful. This overreaction of the body's immune system is known as an allergic reaction and the substances that cause it are called allergens. Allergic reactions are commonly seen in skin resulting in a red, itchy rash in which the substance comes in contact with the skin.

Symptoms

  • Bubbles filled with fluid on the skin
  • Swelling of the skin
  • Inflammation of skin
  • Flushed skin
  • Skin blisters
  • Red rashes of skin when in contact with the irritant
  • Swelling over the body
  • Dry skin
  • Sensitive skin
  • Redness of the skin

Causes

Common Allergens

  • Nickel, a metal used in jewellery and snaps on jeans, makeup, lotions, soaps, and shampoos.
  • Sunscreens and bug sprays.
  • Medications you put on your skin, like antibiotics or anti-itch creams.
  • Fragrances.
  • Cleaning products.
  • Plants, including poison ivy.
  • Latex, which is used in stretchy things like plastic gloves, elastic in clothing, condoms, and balloons.
  • Chemicals.

Other causes due to diet and lifestyle includes:

  1. Excess intake of sour ,salty and pungent food
  2. Excessive intake of mustard
  3. Exposure to cold wind
  4. Contact of cold substances
  5. Day sleep
  6. Suppression of vomiting reflux
  7. Insect bite
  8. Contact of poisonous insects/bugs
  9. Incompatible food like taking milk and sour food together
  10. Eating food before the previous meal is digested
  11. Eating large amounts of sour gruels
  12. Untimely food habits

According to Ayurveda, there are three elements present in our body; vata, pitta and kapha. Because of the above-said causative factors it leads to impairment of digestion and aggravation of pitta. Impaired digestion causes accumulation of toxins known as ama. Ama  spreads to all parts of the body and accumulates in the body’s external surface (beneath the skin), eventually producing allergic symptoms.

Treatment

Treatment protocol aims at;

  1. Treating inflammation of the skin and maintaining  normal texture of the skin.
  2. Prevent recurrence by balancing the immune response.
  3. Regular intake of supplements can help in long term relief and rejuvenating the whole body.

The first line of treatment should always be avoiding the causative factors. If the problem persists then consider the following treatment protocol:

  1. Burning sensation and red rashes, skin inflammation, fever - Allergic reaction resulting in inflammation can be managed with the help of Haridrakhand, Sariva, Manjistha, Yasthimadhu by regulating the immune response and balancing the  vitiated dosha 
  2. Itching and bubble filled with fluid, swelling in the skin, swelling in the body, redness of skin managed with Sariva, Triphala guggulu, Kaishora guggulu, Musta these drugs are excellent blood purifiers and ama pachana (removing ama) from the body, that will help to treat disease from its root and prevent the further attack. Good for allover skin health.
