Migraine


Overview

Migraine is a very common disorder characterized by repeated attacks of headache usually unilateral with different intensity. It is the second most common cause of headache.  Migraine attack can last for hours to days, and the pain can be so severe that it interferes with your daily activities.

Symptoms

Before migraine-

  • Constipation
  • Mood changes from depression to euphoria
  • Food cravings
  • Neck stiffness
  • Increased thirst and urination
  • Frequent yawning. 

Before or During migraine

  • Visual phenomena such as seeing various shapes bright spots or flashes of light
  • Vision loss.
  • Pins and needles sensation in an arm or leg.
  • Weakness or numbness in the face or one side of the body
  • Difficulty speaking.
  • Hearing noises or music
  • Uncontrollable jerking or other movements. 

During migraine

  • Pain usually on one side of your head, but often on both sides.
  • Pain that throbs or pulses
  • Sensitivity to light, sound, and sometimes smell and touch
  • Nausea and vomiting.

According to Ayurveda there are three elements present in our body: vata, pitta and kapha which should be in balance. Migraine is described as Sooryavartha in Ayurveda occurred because of pitta and kapha aggravation.

Causes

Though migraine causes aren't fully understood, 

  • Unhealthy lifestyle
  • Food habits/fasting (with acid-alkaline imbalance)
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Change in the weather
  • Improper sleep
  • Sensitivity to light, sound or smell in particular
  • Stress
  • Genetics
  • Suppression of natural urges of defecation reflex, urinary reflux, tears, vomiting etc

Treatment

Treatment protocol aims at:

  1. Relief from Severe pain
  2. Prevent the complications associated with migraine
  3. Regular intake of supplements in the form of herbs and herbomineral preparation to prevent the recurrence of Migraine

The first line of treatment should always be avoiding the causative factors. If the problem persists then consider the following treatment protocol.

  • Migraine is caused by the excessive stimulation of the brain and blood vessels causing sensory stimulation like visual problems and other symptoms. Expansion of the cranial blood vessels and inflammation of the tissue surrounding the brain exacerbates the pain - Godanti, Laghusootshekhar ras will reduce the pain and manage the migraine.
