Lichen Planus


Overview

Lichen planus is an inflammatory condition of the skin and mucous membranes. It occurs when your body starts to attack your skin or mucous membrane cells for no reason. Although uncomfortable, it’s not usually a serious condition nor is it contagious. The condition can affect anyone although it’s most likely to present itself in those who are middle aged: It’s rare in children and older adults.

Symptoms

  1. Skin: blister, darkening of the skin, loss of colour, peeling, rashes, small bump, ulcers, or redness
  2. Hair loss
  3. Itching
  4. Mouth ulcer
  5. Nail damage or loss
  6. Lacy white patches in the mouth or on the lips or tongue
  7. Pus filled blisters that break open and crust over
  8. Skin colour changes to blue/purple/red

Causes

  • Incompatible food like having milk and fruits together
  • Navadhanya(freshly harvested grains) 
  • Consuming excess 
    • Dairy products
    • Alcohol and green leafy vegetables along with milk
    • Honey and meat after having the hot and spicy food or vice versa
    • Fish
    • Radish
    • Honey
    • Intake of oily and fat rich food
  • Eating before the previous meal is digested
  • Unmindful eating causing indigestion
  • Suppression of natural urges (vomiting and urinary urge)
  • Remain awake during night
  • Stress

According to Ayurveda there are three doshas present in our body; vata, pitta and kapha which should be in balance. Due to the above said causes digestive fire get impaired and result in toxins(ama) formation in the body, that will vitiate the doshas and spread the entire body affecting the Twak(skin), rakta(blood), mamsa (muscle) and lymph and produces the Lichen planus.

Treatment

Treatment protocol aims at:

  1. Treating inflammation of the skin and maintaining normal texture of the skin.
  2. Prevent recurrence by healing and repairing the tissue.
  3. Regular intake of supplements can help in long term relief and rejuvenating the whole body.

The first line of treatment should always be avoiding the causative factors. If the problem persists then consider the following treatment protocol:

  1. Skin: blister, darkening of the skin, loss of colour, peeling, rashes, small bump, ulcers, or redness, Pus filled blisters that break open and crust over, Itching Mouth ulcer, Lacy white patches in the mouth or on the lips or tongue - All these skin changes are associated with hyper reaction of the immune system with skin cells. Manjistha, Kamadudha, Gandhaka Rasayana, Laghusootshekhar ras and Kaishora guggulu will normalise the immune response by purifying the blood and body channels from toxins (ama).Also helps in healing and repair of skin cells.
  2. Hair loss or nail damage- By the time inflammation will spread to other parts of the body and affects areas of skin where there is hair and causes hair loss. In this condition Yasthimadhu and Arogyavardhini vati are effective.
