According to Ayurveda there are three elements present in our body : vata pitta and kapha which should be in balance. All the above factors cause imbalance in these elements and build up of Ama (toxins) in the body, which spreads to the joints, muscles and cartilage causes swelling and pain in the area of joints of hands, feet, ankles, elbows, lower back, knee and hip. Ama also disrupts the bone metabolism and causes bone deformities or diseases. (Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid arthritis etc.)
