Hyperacidity


Overview

Hyperacidity, also known as gastritis or acid reflux, is the inflammation of the stomach's lining that is usually caused by excessive production of acid, largely hydrochloric acid in the stomach. It is one of the commonest diseases seen in all age groups.

Symptoms

  • Gaseous distention of abdomen
  • Feeling of restlessness
  • Actual vomiting
  • Sour belching
  • Indigestion
  • Constipation
  • Lack of appetite
  • Stiffness in the stomach
  • Heart & chest burn(retrosternal burning)

Causes

  • Excessive intake of spicy, pungent, acidic, sour, alkaline nature foods
  • Eating food before the previous meal is digested
  • Food items which produces burning sensation or heat in the body
  • Eating mindlessly, habits of eating too fast or too slow
  • Eating processed and fried food excessively
  • Untimely food habits
  • Habits which produce more heat in the body like exposure to sun, hot weather, heat waves, etc
  • Incompatible food like having milk and fruits together
  • Stress and Anxiety, Excessive anger
  • Smoking
  • Excessive consumption of Alcohol
  • Not following a healthy diet plan in certain digestive disorders like diarrhea and irritable bowels are also one of the causes of this disease

According to Ayurveda there are three fundamental energies present in our body: Vata, Pitta, Kapha which should be in balance. Hyperacidity, or acidity known as Amlapitta (Amla means sour; Pitta means heat) is caused due to the above said factors leading to the aggravation of pitta dosha and production of ama (toxins).

Treatment

Treatment protocol aims at:

  1. Giving relief from heartburn and sour belching and maintaining the normal gastric juice production and digestion.
  2. Prevention of complications and improving overall digestive health and peristalsis so that recurrence of Hyper acidity can be prevented.
  3. Regular intake of supplements to cure symptoms of Hyper acidity in the form of herbs and herbomineral preparations.

The first line of treatment should always be avoiding the causative factors. If the problem persists then consider the following treatment protocol:

  1. Digestive issues such as lack of appetite, bloating, gas and indigestion happen due to unhealthy diet and lifestyle. It should be treated with Laghusootshekhar ras, Pravalapanchamrutha.
  2. Sour belching, Heartburn and Vomiting - Excessive acid production irritates the lining of the stomach causing burning sensation meanwhile, acid back up along with food and fluids leading to belching and vomiting. Managing it with Yasthimadhu, Kamadudha, Suvarna makshika and Laghusootshekhar ras.
