Hydronephrosis

Overview

Hydronephrosis is the swelling of a kidney due to a build-up of urine. It can occur in one or both kidneys. The main function of the urinary system is to remove wastes and fluid from the body. Kidney swelling happens when urine can't drain from the kidney. Kidney may become so engorged with urine that it starts to press on nearby organs. If it’s left untreated for too long, this pressure can cause kidneys to lose function permanently.

Symptoms

  1. Flank pain that many travel to the lower abdomen or groin
  2. Failure to thrive in infants
  3. Vomiting
  4. Nausea
  5. Painful urination
  6. Back pain
  7. Fever
  8. Urgent need to urinate

According to Ayurveda there are three elements present in our body: vata pitta and kapha which should be in balance. As Kidneys regulate levels of fluid, minerals, salts, and other substances in the body, imbalance of these three elements leads to Hydronephrosis.

Causes

  • Partial blockage in the urinary tract - eg. Kidney stone in the urinary tract.
  • Congenital blockage (a defect that is present at birth)
  • Blood clot
  • Scarring of tissue (from injury or previous surgery)
  • Tumor or cancer (examples include bladder, cervical, colon, or prostate)
  • Enlarged prostate (noncancerous)
  • Pregnancy
  • Urinary tract infection (or other diseases that cause inflammation of the urinary tract)

Treatment

Treatment protocol aims at:

  1. Relief from pain associated with Hydronephrosis
  2. Enhance normal functioning of the urinary system
  3. Rejuvenate the whole body and Protect kidneys from complication of hydronephrosis

Hydronephrosis is usually treated by addressing the underlying disease or cause, such as a kidney stone or infection which result in swelling and painful urination

Flank pain is associated with the kidney because of shared nerve connection

  • Varuna is helpful in urinary tract strictures and kidney stones.
  • Gokshuradi guggulu, Punarnava and Chandraprabha vati reduce the inflammation, also effective in reducing the swelling and painful urination.
  • Inflammation  results in rise in temperature and fever, manage by Guduch

Nausea and vomiting happened because of shared nerve connections between the kidneys and GI tract

  • Godanti,  Pravalapanchamrutha are effective in this condition.

(The above mentioned Ayurvedic drugs are Herbs and Herbomineral preparations)

In cases of severe blockage and hydronephrosis, excess urine may need to be removed using either a catheter to drain urine from the bladder or a special tube called a nephrostomy that drains urine from the kidney. The key to treatment is to get it addressed as soon as possible in order to avoid any permanent damage to the kidneys.
