Haemorrhoids


Overview

Haemorrhoids or Piles are dilated or swollen veins under the rectum around the anal opening.They can be either internal or external. Piles are caused due to increased pressure in the lower rectum which interfere with blood flow causing it to pool and enlarge the vessels surrounding the anus.

Symptoms

  1. Bloating
  2. Constipation
  3. Loss of appetite, indigestion
  4. Swelling around the anal region
  5. Bleeding from the your rectum - bright red blood stool, on toilet paper
  6. Anal irritation and itching
  7. Pain and discomfort  in the anus
  8. Secondary anemia
  9. Pus Discharge 
     According to Ayurveda there are three fundamental energies present in our body: Vata, Pitta, Kapha which should be in balance.Vitiation of the Tridosha (Vata, Pitta, Kapha) causes low or deranged digestive fire resulting in accumulation of waste products and varicosity of veins in the rectum .

If the swelling around the anus is

  • Very hard, rough and blackish in colour and painful accompanied by constipation : Vata is predominant.
  • Soft, reddish in colour, inflamed and bleeding. Thirst, diarrhoea and fever may also be present:  Pitta is predominant .
  • Large, soft, slimy with digestive problems and whitish in colour : Kapha.
  • Combination of above symptoms: All the Tridosha (Vata, Pitta, Kapha) are predominant equally.

 

Causes

  • Straining during bowel movements
  • Constant sitting on hard objects
  • Prolonged sitting on the toilet
  • Having chronic diarrhea or constipation
  • Eating a low-fiber diet
  • Often lifting heavy objects
  • Women are more likely to get haemorrhoids while pregnant
  • The likelihood of developing haemorrhoids increases as a person age and if the person is obese
  • Habits of eating heavy food, chillies, spices, excessive intake of fried food

 

Treatment

Treatment protocol aims at :

  1. Giving relief from pain, itching and inflammation which causes extreme discomfort  in haemorrhoids.
  2. Treating inflammation of the inflamed veins of the anal canal, prevention of complications and improving overall digestive health and peristalsis so that recurrence of haemorrhoids can be prevented.
  3. Regular intake of supplements to cure hemorrhoids in the form of herbs and herbomineral preparations

The first line of treatment should always be avoiding the causative factors.If the problem persists then consider the following treatment protocol: 

1. Digestive issues such as bloating, loss of appetite and indigestion happens due to unhealthy diet, lifestyle. It should be treated with Balharitaki, Surana, Pravalapanchamrutha.

2. Constipation and swelling around the anus - In this stage you should manage the condition with Sonamukhi and triphala which normalizes the intestinal transit time and acts as natural laxatives. It also helps to heal and repair tissue and prevent occurrence.

 3. Bleeding, pus discharge, itching and irritation- Due to hard stool or straining, the swollen veins may burst which cause bleeding, taking Aragvadha, Suranvatak, Amruthadi guggulu, Nagakesara will arrest the bleeding and prevent the attack of secondary microbial infection causing pus discharge, itching and irritation.

Step 4: Heal the skin around the anal canal due to bleeding or infection - Kamadudha and Suranvatak helps in healing.
