GERD

Overview

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)  is a digestive disorder in which the acidic stomach content backs up into the esophagus, sometimes including fluids and food particles. This backwash also known as ‘Acid reflux’ irritates the lining and even causes damage to the esophagus.

Symptoms

A burning sensation in your chest (heartburn), usually after eating, which might be worse at night.

  • Bad breath
  • Regurgitation of food or sour liquid
  • Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia)
  • Chest pain
  • Disrupted sleep
  • Nighttime acid reflux associated with Chronic cough.

Causes

  1. Eating food before the previous meal is digested.
  2. Untimely food habits.
  3. Eating processed and fried food excessively.
  4. Eating mindlessly, habits of eating too fast or too slow.
  5. Excessive intake of spicy, pungent, acidic, sour, alkaline nature foods.
  6. Food items which produces burning sensation or heat in the body.
  7. Incompatible food like having milk and fruits together.
  8. Habits which produce more heat in the body like exposure to sun, hot weather, heat waves, etc.
  9. Stress and Anxiety, Excessive anger.
  10. Excessive consumption of Alcohol.
  11. Smoking.
  12. Lower esophageal sphincter (LES), the muscle that acts as a valve between your esophagus and stomach, relaxes or doesn’t close properly. This allows stomach contents like acidic digestive juices(sour liquid) and food particles to back up into your esophagus.

According to Ayurveda, three biological elements/doshas are present in our body they are vata, pitta, kapha which should be in balance. Because of the above said causative factors pitta get aggravated leading to acid reflux.

Treatment

Treatment protocol aims at:

  1. Giving‌ ‌relief‌ ‌from‌ ‌the‌ ‌heart‌ ‌burn‌ ‌and‌ ‌chest‌ ‌pain‌
  2. Prevent‌ ‌recurrence‌ ‌by‌ ‌healing‌ ‌and‌ ‌repairing‌ ‌the‌ ‌tissue‌
  3. Regular‌ ‌intake‌ ‌of‌ ‌supplements‌ ‌can‌ ‌help‌ ‌in‌ ‌long‌ ‌term‌ ‌relief‌ ‌and‌ ‌maintaining‌ ‌normal‌ ‌
    digestive‌ ‌capacity.‌

The‌ ‌first‌ ‌line‌ ‌of‌ ‌treatment‌ ‌should‌ ‌always‌ ‌be‌ ‌avoiding‌ ‌the‌ ‌causative‌ ‌factors.‌ ‌If‌ ‌the‌ ‌problem‌ ‌
persists‌ ‌then‌ ‌consider‌ ‌the‌ ‌following‌ ‌treatment‌ ‌protocol.‌ ‌
‌
1.Regurgitation‌ ‌of‌ ‌food‌ ‌or‌ ‌sour‌ ‌liquid,‌ ‌bad‌ ‌breath‌ ‌-‌ ‌‌Due‌ ‌to‌ ‌unhealthy‌ ‌diet‌ ‌and‌ ‌habits‌ ‌
resulting‌ ‌in‌ ‌deranged‌ ‌digestion‌ ‌and‌ ‌too‌ ‌much‌ ‌acid‌ ‌in‌ ‌the‌ ‌stomach‌ ‌stagnating‌ ‌the‌ ‌food‌ ‌
particles‌ ‌in‌ ‌the‌ ‌stomach‌ ‌and‌ ‌resulting‌ ‌in‌ ‌reflux‌ ‌along‌ ‌with‌ ‌bad‌ ‌breath.‌‌ ‌‌Bilva,‌ ‌Godanti,‌ ‌
Vidanga,‌ ‌Yasthimadhu,‌ ‌Amalaki,‌ ‌Haritaki‌‌ ‌and‌ ‌‌Bibhitaki‌‌ ‌regulate‌ ‌the‌ ‌acid‌ ‌production‌ ‌
and‌ ‌reduce‌ ‌the‌ ‌acidity‌ ‌of‌ ‌the‌ ‌gastric‌ ‌juice.‌ ‌
‌
2.A‌ ‌burning‌ ‌sensation‌ ‌in‌ ‌your‌ ‌chest‌ ‌worsening‌ ‌at‌ ‌night,‌ ‌Nighttime‌ ‌acid‌ ‌reflux‌ ‌
associated‌ ‌with‌ ‌Chronic‌ ‌cough‌ ‌and‌ ‌Disrupted‌ ‌sleep,‌ ‌Difficulty‌ ‌swallowing‌‌ ‌-‌ ‌Due‌ ‌to‌ ‌
excessive‌ ‌acidic‌ ‌content‌ ‌and‌ ‌concentration‌ ‌of‌ ‌acid‌ ‌in‌ ‌the‌ ‌stomach‌ ‌getting‌ ‌higher‌ ‌at‌ ‌night,‌ ‌
it‌ ‌results‌ ‌in‌ ‌burning‌ ‌sensation‌ ‌and‌ ‌acid‌ ‌reflux.‌ ‌Also‌ ‌in‌ ‌lying‌ ‌position,‌ ‌it‌ ‌is‌ ‌easier‌ ‌for‌ ‌acid‌ ‌to‌ ‌
back‌ ‌up‌ ‌causing‌ ‌acid‌ ‌reflux‌ ‌worse‌ ‌and‌ ‌at‌ ‌times‌ ‌trigger‌ ‌the‌ ‌cough‌ ‌reflux‌ ‌and‌ ‌difficulty‌ ‌
swallowing‌ ‌by‌ ‌irritating‌ ‌the‌ ‌throat‌ ‌and‌ ‌sleep‌ ‌becomes‌ ‌disrupted.‌ ‌Managing‌ ‌this‌ ‌condition‌ ‌
with‌ ‌‌Kamadudha,‌ ‌Shankha‌ ‌vati,‌ ‌Laghu‌ ‌Sootshekhar,‌ ‌Shivakshar‌ ‌pachan‌ ‌‌will‌ ‌
normalise‌ ‌the‌ ‌acid‌ ‌production,‌ ‌stimulate‌ ‌digestion‌ ‌and‌ ‌ease‌ ‌the‌ ‌pain.‌ ‌
(‌The‌ ‌above‌ ‌mentioned‌ ‌Ayurvedic‌ ‌drugs‌ ‌are‌ ‌‌Herbs‌ ‌and‌ ‌Herbo-mineral‌ ‌preparations‌)‌ ‌
‌
Other‌ ‌treatments‌ ‌‌- Practicing‌ ‌pranayama‌ ‌and‌ ‌yoga‌ ‌asanas‌ ‌help‌ ‌to‌ ‌relieve‌ ‌stress‌ ‌and‌ ‌also‌ ‌
provide‌ ‌long‌ ‌time‌ ‌relief‌ ‌from‌ ‌GERD.‌
