Frozen shoulder


Overview

Frozen Shoulder, also called adhesive capsulitis, causes pain and stiffness in the shoulder.  Shoulder joint structures are enclosed with a fibrous sheath capsule. Frozen shoulder occurs when this capsule thickens and tightens around the shoulder joint. Over time, the shoulder becomes very hard to move.

Symptoms

  • Dull achy pain in shoulder.
  • Stiffness in shoulder.
  • Difficulty in  shoulder movement.
  • Arm pain.
  • Limited range of motion.

 

According to Ayurveda there are three elements present in our body : Vata,Pitta and Kapha which should be in balance. Frozen shoulder also known as Apabahuka is a disease that usually affects the Amsa sandhi (shoulder joint). It is produced by the Vata dosha. Amsa shosha (wasting of the shoulder) can be considered as the preliminary stage of the disease. The stiffness to the joints is contributed by Kapha Dosha.

Causes

  • Injury to shoulder.
  • Inflammation of ligament holding shoulder bones.
  • Surgery that makes the shoulder immobile for a long time.
  • Conditions such as diabetes, hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, Parkinson’s disease, and cardiac disease.
  • Overuse of shoulder joints.

Treatment

Treatment protocol aims at :

  1. Relief from pain, numbness and weakness
  2. Prevent progression of disease
  3. Rejuvenate the degenerated connective tissue

The first line of treatment should always be avoiding the causative factors. If the problem persists then consider the following treatment protocol.

  • Pain Stiffness in shoulder and arm pain - occurs due to inflammation, scarring, thickening and shrinkage of the capsule that surrounds the normal shoulder joint. Gokshura, Punarnava, Mahayogaraja guggulu and Trayodashang guggul will help to heal the inflammation in joints and bring down pain in the joint and to improve flexibility
  • Rejuvenation of degenerated connective tissue - Ashwagandha, Jatamansi, Tapyadi loha strengthen the whole joint structures and prevent degeneration

Other therapies - Abhyanga(oil massage), Basti (enema), Virechana/Purgation therapy (cleaning digestive tract and purifies blood), Vasti (enema), Nasya ( Herbal oils are applied through the nostrils) Lepa (therapy wherein paste of drug is applied to the affected part). Pichu (Cotton swabs soaked in hot oil applied to the affected part), Sudation therapy with - Herbal Poultice (Pathra podali pinda sweda), Shashtika shali pinda sweda.
