Eye Sty


Overview

Stye is a red, painful lump near the edge of the eyelid that may look like a boil or pimple.

Symptoms

  • Swelling in the eyelids
  • Eyelid pain
  • Redness of eyes
  • Tearing of eyes
  • Lump on the eyelid
  • Eyelid tenderness
  • Puffy eyes
  • Watery eye

According to Ayurveda, sty can be correlated with “ kumbhika”.

Causes

The bacterium staphylococcus is commonly responsible for most of these infections.

Predisposing factors

  • Touching your eyes with unwashed hands
  • Inserting your contact lenses without thoroughly disinfecting them or washing your hands first
  • Leaving eye makeup overnight
  • Use of old or expired cosmetics
  • Have blepharitis, a chronic inflammation along the edge of the eyelid.
  • Have rosacea, a skin condition characterized by facial redness.

Treatment

Treatment protocol aims at 

  • Reducing the pain and inflammation in the eyelid.

Styes occur when the oil glands in the eye become inflamed due to infection producing pain, swelling and tenderness in the eyelid. As a result of infection sometimes the outer layer of the eye ball also gets affected and shows symptoms like watery eyes and redness.

  • Triphala guggulu and Triphala helps to reduce the inflammation
  • Guduchi , Lodhra helps to reduce the burning eyes
  • Yashtimadhu helps to heal the inflamed cells
  • Avipattikar churna helps to calm down the vitiated doshas. 

Stye usually go away on their own without the need of any medicine and supervention if proper hygiene and care is taken.
