Endometriosis

Overview

Endometriosis is a disorder in which tissue that normally lines the uterus (endometrium) grows outside the uterus, most commonly in ovaries, fallopian tubes and the tissue lining your pelvis. Rarely, endometrial tissue may spread beyond pelvic organs. It may result in scar tissue, adhesion or presence of endometrioma (chocolate cyst).

  2. Spotting or bleeding between periods
  3. Pain during intercourse
  4. Nausea/ Vomiting
  5. Bloating or flatulence
  6. Diarrhoea or constipation
  7. Infertility
  8. Endometriosis may be asymptomatic
  9. Painful urination or bowel movements
  10. Heavy menstrual bleeding
  11. Low back/ Pelvic pain
  12. Severe menstrual cramps.

Endometriosis may be asymptomatic

According to Ayurveda, there are three biological elements present in our body; vata, pitta and kapha which can affect the body functions when imbalanced. Vata controls the flow of blood, including menstruation and is responsible for the elimination of waste products from the body. A deranged vata can change the flow of blood (pitta) and disturb the Kapha dosha which leads to growth of endometrium in places other than regular sites.

Causes

Aggravated vata is the main causative factor for endometriosis. Vata get aggravated due to

  • Suppression of natural urges (Natural urges are the Involuntary functions such as hunger, tears, urination, sneezing, farting etc.)
  • Excess physical activity
  • Substance abuse
  • Excessive travelling
  • Excess consumption of raw foods
  • Consuming too much cold, dry, rough, unctuous, pungent, astringent and bitter substances
  • Fear, grief and anger
  • Mental and emotional stress

Treatment

Treatment protocol aims at:

  1. Maintaining hormonal balance and reduce pain and cramping (balance the vata).
  2. Relief from heavy bleeding arrests the growth of endometrium outside the uterus and  maintaining the normal reproductive health.
  3. Provide strength and stamina to the whole body.

The first line of treatment should always be avoiding/treating the causative factors. If the problem persists then consider the following treatment protocol:

  • Menstrual cramps, low back pain, spotting and excessive bleeding (menorrhogia) - Unhealthy diet or lifestyle imbalance the hormones and the inflammatory environment within the pelvis may contribute cramps/pain and excessive bleeding. Managing this condition with Ashoka, Haritaki, Amalaki and Kanchanar guggulu will regulate the hormone and heal the tissue. Promote overall menstrual health and hormonal balance)
  • Rejuvenate the reproductive system and cure fatigue, Infertility - Adhesion, Cyst, Scarring and Inflammation might make ovulation, fertilization and implantation difficult which are essential for a healthy conception and pregnancy. Ashwagandha, Shatavari, Chandraprabha vati, Kanchanar guggulu will regulate the menstrual cycle and hormones. It will also reduce growth of cyst or endometrial located other than its normal place, scaring, adhesion which cause digestive issues and painful bowel/urination.
