Dermatitis


Overview

Dermatitis/contact dermatitis is a common condition that occurs when in contact with substances that irritate the skin or cause an allergic reaction. Dermatitis isn't contagious, but it can make you feel uncomfortable and self-conscious.

Symptoms

  • Skin: red rashes, blister, fissures, hives, peeling, or ulcers
  • Pain areas: in the skin
  • Itching
  • Sleep problem 

Causes

Common irritants or allergens that cause dermatitis are as follows:

  • Poison ivy
  • Perfumes
  • Jewellery containing nickel
  • Cleaning products and chemicals
  • Preservatives in many creams and lotions.                
  • Predisposing/Promoting causes are:
    • Incompatible food like having milk and fruits together
    • Suppression of vomiting urge.
    • Eating before the previous meal is digested.
    • Excessive Intake of
      • Dairy products
      • Fish
      • Radish
      • Intake of oily and fat rich food.
      • Sour, sweet, salt, and pungent food.
      • Navadhanya (freshly harvested grains).
    • Stress
    • Remain awake during night.

According to Ayurveda, three elements: vata, pitta and kapha are present in our body which are in balance in a healthy person. Due to the above causes it deranged the digestion and formed toxins(ama) in the body. Ama in turn started vitiating the three elements and spread through the entire body affecting the Twak(skin), rakta(blood), mamsa (muscle) and produces dermatitis.

Treatment

Treatment protocol aims at:

  1. Treating inflammation of skin and maintaining normal texture of skin
  2. Prevent recurrence by repairing the tissue
  3. Regular intake of supplements can help in long term relief and rejuvenating the whole body

The first line of treatment should always be avoiding the causative factors. If the problem persists then consider the following treatment protocol.

  • Red rashes, blisters, fissures, hives, peeling, or ulcers - All these skin changes are due to inflammation of the skin due interaction with allergen. Khadira, Sariva, Sarivadi vati, Manjistha, Kaishora guggulu helps to purify blood and clear the skin
  • Skin itching  due to skin irritation should be managed with Aragvadha, Nimba
  • Haritaki, Amalaki, Sonamukhi - helps to remove the toxins from the body, heals the wound and prevents recurrence.
