We are all more obsessed with our appearance than we like to admit. But this is not an indication of 'vanity'. Vanity means conceit, excessive pride in one's appearance. Concern about appearance is quite normal and understandable.

In the first of a series of conversations on beauty, NPR's Susan Stamberg talks with Linda Wells, editor of Allure magazine. Wells says Allure evolved in the past 13 years. Its magazine covers don't portray one particular type of person as beautiful all the time. She says popularity, timing and interest are all things to consider when choosing who goes on the cover of a beauty magazine.

Jean Kilbourne, author of Can't Buy My Love -- How Advertising Changes the Way We Think and Feel, says the media have created an ideal of beauty for young girls that is dangerously unachievable. Kilbourne speaks with NPR's Susan Stamberg in the second in a series of conversations on the nature of beauty.
