Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is sudden, life-threatening lung failure. ARDS inflames the alveoli, causing them to fill with liquid and collapse. ARDS is a syndrome, not a specific disease. A variety of underlying, unrelated conditions, from blood-borne infections to major trauma, can cause the characteristic inflammation and accumulation of fluid (edema) in the alveoli.

Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome - In 1967, Ashbaugh first described adult or acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) as a syndrome of severe respiratory failure associated with pulmonary infiltrates similar to infant hyaline membrane disease.ARDS is defined as the presence of bilateral pulmonary infiltrates on chest radiograph, impaired oxygenation resulting in a PaO2 to fraction of inspired oxygen (FIO2) ratio of less than 200, and absence of elevated pulmonary arterial occlusion pressure (PAOP) or left atrial pressure. Stated another way, ...

Respiratory Distress Syndrome, Adult - Adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a diffuse pulmonary parenchymal injury associated with noncardiogenic pulmonary edema and resulting in severe respiratory distress and hypoxemic respiratory failure. The pathologic hallmark is diffuse alveolar damage (DAD), but lung tissue rarely is available for a pathologic diagnosis. Therefore, diagnosis is made on clinical grounds, according to the following criteria set forth by the American-European Consensus Conference/Acute onsetBilateral infiltratesPulmonary artery wedge pressure less than 19 mm Hg (or no ...
